THE DRY ICE BLASTING METHOD
Dry ice blasting is essentially similar to sand blasting.
The blasting medium however is dry ice pellets that immediately sublimate into the atmosphere after striking the surface being cleaned.
So No Waste cleaning media.
The pellets are fed into a compressed air stream in the dry ice blasting machine,
accelerated to over 150 m/s and blasted onto the object being cleaned via a blasting hose with a trigger gun and nozzle.
No abrasive residues remain! The dirt falls to the ground and is then swept away.
Dry Ice blast cleaning works in 3 ways:
1. Kinetic Energy.
Kinetic energy is transferred from the dry ice media to the surface,
chipping away at the contaminant and is then converted to heat producing
sublimation - the process of turning from solid to vapour.
2. Thermal Differentials.
In some situations, the contaminant and substrate are rapidly cooled by
the blast stream. Dry ice has a temperature of - 78°C. The two materials
can often contract at different rates and so weakening the bond between the
two materials. This is particularly noticeable where hard resins have been
applied to metallic surfaces.
3. Reverse Fracturing.
As the Dry Ice media warms up, it is converted directly back into
carbon dioxide vapour, expanding rapidly. This effect (sublimation) forces
the contaminant from the underlying surface.
